Writing Prompt – Action

Foundations of Fiction: Character Action
March 26, 2022 by fridtha Leave a Comment

“Christ woman, are you effing BLIND?!” The man screamed at her, “Read the damn cup, plain as day, Says ‘ROGER’, ‘RO_UH_GERRRR,’ I don’t think your name is Roger sweetheart.”

Taken aback by the vehemence of the man’s words, it took her a moment to process what he said. In that time, he had snatched the cup out of her hands and turned to walk away, mumbling about ditzy blind chicks.

“HEY, JACKASS!!” The words surprised her, less to do with the shocking volume, and mainly because they came out of her own mouth. An anger, that both scared and liberated her, suffused her body as she stalked over to said jackass who had, surprise surprise, actually stopped and turned to look at her.

Her eyes, slit to dangerous daggers, bored into a man who was suddenly unsure of his personal safety.

“IF! Your mother had taught you any manners, you would have asked politely before taking that from me, and found out that, no, my name is NOT Ro,uh,ger, but it IS the name of my coworker. AND! Since I was in line before you, I’m reasonably certain THAT coffee belongs to me! So, if you don’t want to be wearing THAT coffee, you will hand it back to me. Carefully!”

The man’s heart dropped off a thousand-foot cliff as the impossible happened in real time. He had just actually fallen in love with this gorgeous little force of nature.

Staring after as the door closed behind her, “Well damn, what do I do with that now?”

Writing Prompt – TMI

Foundations of Fictions: Bad writing prompt – Too much information

Medieval Knight

You heard him ages before you saw him.

First the earth shaking crash as he half jumped and half fell off his horse. Then the rhythmic clatter as he stomped into the keep, sounding like a one man clash of armies marching inexorably onward. After clattering into the great hall, he removed his helmet stained in blood and rust, and absently threw it at his squire who fell on his stomach attempting to catch it.

His coal black hair was caked to his head in sweat and blood. Looking at the people arrayed around him, his casual arrogance oozed off him like treacle. His thin mustache and lopsided sneer chilled a hall that was otherwise deep in the heart of summer.

His armor, held on by a seemingly endless number of leather buckles was carefully removed one at a time. He waited with barely contained patience as servants worked to free him from his metal cage.

When wine arrived, he roughly pushed one servant out of the way so that he could get to it. Eschewing the goblet, he went straight for the bottle and upended it, finishing half it’s contents in one pull.

Writing Prompt – Character Thoughts

Write a scene to describe what a character is thinking.

https://www.writingmastery.com

“A woman sits down on a plane, right next to the pop star she had a crush on in high school.”

Oh. My. God. Is that..? Ohmigod it IS!

Why is he in coach? Holy shit he’s sitting next to me! Damn.. He looks good, if a bit tired. Dresses well, if a bit wrinkled. Well, of course. Famous guy like that, he probably partied late last night in some swanky LA pad or something.

Christ, he looks even better in real life. How is that possible, don’t they have makeup artists to glam up for the movies? This guy doesn’t need any more glamming. Oh shit, is he going to say something to me? Stop staring you ninny, you’re not a teen girl anymore. Be casual. A quick nod and a smile, that’s all you need, there you go.. Good girl.., good… God, he smells good. I knew not wearing sweats was a good choice today. Oh! There, he smiled at me! How do I talk to him without sounding like a love-struck tween?

Maybe he’ll be sociable and ask ME something. Please ask me something. Anything!

Hey, he’s wearing a nice watch. Expensive but not flashy. Kind of like the rest of him. Will his voice be as soothing in real life as it is in the movies, when he’s in bed with some starlet?

Dammit, now don’t start thinking about him in bed.
